RESTORATION OF THE WORN
DENTITION AND SOFT TISSUE
MANAGEMENT IN FIXED
PROSTHODONTICS
The number of patients presenting to dental offices with
excessive loss of tooth structure is clearly increasing.
This loss of tooth structure is often multi-factorial, and
all potential etiologies of the wear must be considered
before tackling extensive rehabilitative procedures. This
presentation will analyze the various causes of tooth
structure loss and present strategies to prevent further
loss as well as reconstructive procedures to replace lost
tooth structure. Topics to be discussed include:
- The relative roles of chemical erosion and bruxism
in patients with excessive loss of tooth structure
- The diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dental
erosion
- Intrinsic versus extrinsic erosion
- The etiology and management of bruxism
- The controversy surrounding occlusal vertical
dimension
- Neuromuscular occlusion: religion or evidencebased?
- Materials considerations for restoration of the worn
dentition
- Abfraction: fact or fiction
- Treatment recommendations for non-carious cervical
lesions
Fixed prosthodontic procedures are a significant
component of contemporary dental practice. Materials
and techniques have improved dramatically in recent
years, but many new materials have very specific
indications and contraindications which must be
understood if long-term clinical success is to be
achieved. We will review and explain traditional as well
as contemporary techniques essential for performing
predictable, successful esthetic fixed prosthodontic
procedures.
