     Esthetic dentistry is much more than "pretty" teeth. Meeting the esthetic challenge in dentistry today requires a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to patient care.

Esthetic analysis should be an integral part of diagnosis and treatment planning. An essential pan of this process is the determination of tooth position and arrangement as a component of the smile. It is also important to understand the soft tissue components in esthetic make-up, especially in the patient with a high lip line. Failure to diagnose and correct soft tissue problems leads to disappointing esthetic

results for both the patient and the dentist. Soft tissue problems include insufficient clinical crown length, gingivol asymmetry, gingival recession, loss of interdental papilbe and less ef alveolar ridge centaur. Careful treatment planning with coordination of periodontal and restorative therapies will enhance the esthetics of the completed case.

This course will present the esthetic principles of smile analysis and interdisciplinary treatment of complex cases. Periodontal and prosthetic procedures will be illustrated step by step with discussion of timing and sequencing of steps to achieve superior results.


Dr. Edward P. Allen received his D.D.S. from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1969. He completed aResidency in Periodontics and earned a Ph.D. in Physiology from Baylor University Graduate School. Currently, he is a Professor at the Baylor College of Dentistry, Department of Periodontics and maintains a full-time periodontal practice in Dallas, Texas with an emphasis on periodontal plastic surgery.

Dr. Allen is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics. He was elected to fellowship in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Allen served on the Committee on Mucogingival Surgery at the World Workshop in Clinical Periodontics in both 1989 and 1996. He currently is the periodontal Section Editor for the Journal of Esthetic Dentistry and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Periodontology, the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, the Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry and the European Journal of Dentistry. He has contributed to the literature in the area of esthetic surgical procedures and has presented lectures and surgical demonstrations worldwide.


Dr. Winter graduated from Marquefte University School of Dentistry, and in 1983 completed his prosthodontic specialty residency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He maintains a private practice limited to prosthodontics in Newport Beach, California, and is a member of the graduate prosthodontics faculty at the University of Washington. Dr. Winter is a co-founder of the Newport Beach Dental Forum, an educational facility in Newport Beach, California.

Having taught didactic, clinical and technical courses in over 35 countries, Dr. Winter is recognized around the world for his skills as both a clinician and ceramist. This unique blending of disciplines and talent as a teacher, continues to keep him in high demand as a speaker. In 199~, he was the second recipient of the Gordon Christensen Lecturer Recognition Award for Excellence in Teaching.

He is a member of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the American College of Prosthodontists the International College of Prosthodontists. and the International College of Dentists.
